SNOW CRASH — A New Interpretation

This new Snow Crash print is a contemporary reimagining of the image I created for the first-edition cover of Neal Stephenson’s groundbreaking novel.

More than thirty years later, I returned to my original sketches and imagery and began exploring what this work could become today. Using contemporary digital tools, I have created a new interpretation that preserves the visual DNA of the original while allowing it to evolve into something distinctly new.

The original cover was created in 1991–92, at the very beginning of digital illustration. The technology was primitive, and the final image became an unusual marriage of computer-generated imagery, photography, photomontage, and hand painting. When the digital process could not deliver the resolution I needed, I finished the work by hand with gouache, acrylic, brushes, and an airbrush.

The full story of the original artwork—including the sketches, digital files, 35mm transparencies, photomontage, and original painting—can be seen in my earlier post, SNOWCRASH.

Today, I find myself at another technological threshold.

After initially resisting generative AI, I began experimenting with it using my own drawings and source material. I discovered that these new tools could become another instrument in my process—one that could extend an image I created more than three decades ago without losing its connection to the artist who created it.

This print is the result.
